Florida Launch attackman led league in scoring at age 38
BOSTON – Former Syracuse men's lacrosse superstar and current Florida Launch attackman Casey Powell was named the 2014 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Warrior Offensive Player of the Year earlier this week. Powell was the runaway choice for the award, receiving 12 of the 15 first-place votes and 67 total points in a poll the league's coaches and general managers.
Â
"Obviously, I would've liked to be playing in the championship this weekend, but we've had a great inaugural season and I am honored to receive this award," Powell said in a release announcing the honor. "I had great players around me and great coaches who allowed me to achieve our goals."
The MLL all-time points leader (468), Powell posted his best statistical season since 2002 for the first-year franchise. Powell scored a goal in all 14 games and recorded the second-best shooting percentage (.524) of any attackman in the league. He led the MLL in scoring with 63 points and tied for the league lead with 33 assists.
The 2014 campaign was a remarkable comeback for Powell who also earned MLL Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2005, but hadn't played in more than three regular-season game a year since 2010.
At Syracuse, Powell earned All-America honors four times (1995-98), including three first-team nods. He twice was the winner of the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the USILA Player of the Year (1997, 1998) and he finished his career with a then school-record 287 points (158 goals, 129 assists).
Powell's honor is the second major end-of-the-season MLL award for a former Orange standout. Rochester Rattlers goalkeeper John Galloway was named the Warrior Goalie of the Year last week.
