UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Syracuse allowed a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half in a 2-0 setback to No. 24/9 Penn State on Sunday, August 24. The match was the final contest of the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa.
"Going into halftime we felt quite comfortable," said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. "They are a fast, athletic team at every position. We were taking care of their attack and limiting the quality of their scoring opportunities. Most were long-range shots and many weren't on frame. We had some dangerous opportunities and broke through a couple of times but were stopped by well-timed challenges. We have to capitalize on the opportunities when we get them."
After making her collegiate debut in goal against Missouri on Friday, sophomore MacKenzie Moranz recorded a career-high seven saves in the contest. She extended her streak of minutes played without allowing a goal to 157 before Penn State broke through in the 47th minute. Moranz stopped a shot by Raquel Rodriguez but she could not control the ball. Mallory Weber gained possession of the rebound and put her shot from the near side post into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie.
Weber and Rodriguez connected again in the 52nd minute. Weber took a pass from Rodriguez in front of the net and buried her shot to give the Nittany Lions (2-0-0) a 2-0 lead. Penn State continued to test the Orange (0-1-1) defense, but Syracuse held tough as it successfully defended against four corner kicks in the final 37 minutes of play.
The first half featured five shots for Penn State and two for the Orange. The Nittany Lions had five corner kicks but couldn't take advantage of the opportunities at the teams were tied at 0-0 at intermission. Penn State finished with 17 shots and nine corner kicks, while Syracuse had three shots.
"There were many positives to take from this game," Wheddon said. "We weren't overrun. We were definitely in the game, even when we were down 2-0. We pushed more numbers forward and played more direct and felt like we had a chance. I'm proud of the effort. We can move forward to our next opponent knowing we can compete against the top teams in the country."
The Orange is back in action on Friday, August 29 at Albany at 7 p.m.
