Lauren Brooks' two-goals lead 'Cuse
Box Score
After starting the season with an overtime victory on Friday, the Orange field hockey team moved to 2-0 in much easier fashion on Saturday.
'Cuse cruised to a 5-1 victory over Miami (OH) with the help of a pair of goals from senior midfielder Lauren Brooks and the first collegiate goals from freshmen Lies Lagerweij and Annalena Ulbrich.
"Our kids played with a lot of maturity today," said head coach Ange Bradley. "We got a lot of kids off the field and got them some rest and our subsititutes played well also, limiting them to no corners and just two shots. Our offense still has to get better but we're creating goal-scoring chances."
Brooks got the scoring started in the 17th minute, with Ulbrich giving the Orange a 2-0 cushion 11 minutes later that they would take into halftime. Ulbrich scored with the help Alyssa Manley and Lauren Hurff, who each recorded an assist on the goal.
Syracuse would break it open in the second half, scoring three goals in 10:23 to put the contest out of reach.
Brooks scored her second goal of the afternoon off a feed from Emma Russell just after the 50-minute mark and Lagerweij would find the back of the cage less than a minute later.
The fifth 'Cuse goal came courtesy of senior back Jordan Page, with Russell again on the helper.
The RedHawks would get one back late, but it wasn't enough to stop the Orange from moving to 2-0 for the third-straight season.
The Orange defense held strong on the day as well, allowing just two shots.
Syracuse will now have a day off before continuing its road trip through Ohio on Monday at 1 p.m. at Ohio.
