Volleyball outperforms DePaul, 3-1 in its first game of the Windy City Invite

Syracuse picked up its third win of the season with its performance against DePaul at the Windy City Invite hosted by Chicago State on Friday. The Orange defeated the Blue Demons, 3-1 in its first game of the tournament with Illinois-Chicago and Chicago State set to take on 'Cuse tomorrow.
The first set proved to encompass how the match ultimately played out as DePaul fought the Orange until the very end of every set. Ahead of the Blue Demons, 19-18 in the first, an ace by Lexi Bolotin tied the game at 19. Immediately following the ace the Orange gave its rebuttal and never looked back.
Gosia Wlaszczuk set Silvi Uattara up for a kill to pull ahead 20-19. Uattara followed up her kill with a solo block on the very next play, denying Rachel Breault of her game-tying effort. The following play was also a block in favor of the Orange, only this time it was Lindsay McCabe and Wlaszczuk denying the attack.
Wlaszczuk added one of her six kills on the day to make it 23-19. DePaul took four of the next five points bringing the score to 24-23, only for McCabe to put the set away on a kill assisted by Wlaszczuk.
Monika Salkute assisted the Orange in an 8-2 run picking up three kills of her own on the stretch to give her team a 17-13 lead. From that point in the set 'Cuse allowed just six points, taking a 2-0 lead in the game by a 25-19 score.
Coming out of the break, DePaul controlled the third set taking an early 13-7 lead. The Orange fought back to bring the set to a 13-10 score only to have the Blue Demons go on a 12-5 run to take the third set.
The third set was a back-and-forth struggle until Leah Levert assisted Salkute on a block and picked up a kill to give Syracuse a 16-14 lead. Between solid play by the Orange and self-induced errors by DePaul Syracuse won the set, 25-18.
Leading the attack for the Orange was once again led by Silvi Uattara and Salkute with the two combining for 34-of-54 kills. Wlaszczcuk recorded the third most kills with six while McCabe and Valeriya Shaipova each had five. Wlaszczuk supported the attack with 32 assists and two block assists.
'Cuse was aggressive on the net racking up 23 total blocks, 22 of which were assisted. Levert and McCabe led the team with five assisted blocks each, the only solo block came from Uattara.
