Orange Swept by Team USA at Champions Challenge

Junior Kayla Treanor makes an impact for the U.S. national team.
NAPLES, Fla. – Syracuse took the field for the first time last weekend at the Champions Challenge in Naples, Fla. The Orange took on the U.S. national team in a pair of games on Saturday, Jan. 17.

In the first contest, Syracuse tallied the final four goals of the first half to cut Team USA's lead to 7-6 at intermission. Senior Kailah Kempney scored the first goal of the second half on an assist from Halle Majorana to tie the score at 7-7 before the U.S. responded with nine straight goals to record a 16-7 victory. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson made seven saves.

In game two, Team USA scored eight of the first nine goals and led 9-4 at halftime. The U.S. dominated the second half and defeated the Orange, 20-6. Junior Kayla Treanor did much of the damage for Team USA against her teammates, finishing with five goals and an assist.

The U.S. took on defending national champion Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 18. Treanor had a goal and three assists to help Team USA to a 20-6 victory in the first game. In the second contest, the U.S. posted a 15-9 victory. Former Orange Alyssa Murray '14 had a goal and an assist, while Michelle Tumolo '13 added an assist. Goalkeeper Liz Hogan '11 also saw action against the Terrapins.

Syracuse officially opens the 2015 season on Saturday, Feb. 7 when it hosts Denver at noon and Canisius at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
