Fenne tallies hat trick in the first half to guide Orange to win
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Graduate student midfielder Alma Fenne tallied a hat trick in the first half to guide the No. 1 Syracuse University field hockey team to a 6-0 victory against No. 6 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange hosts No. 19 Princeton on Sunday at 3 p.m. in its regular season finale.
With the victory against the Demon Deacons, Syracuse matched its best start in program history, opening the year with a perfect 14-0 overall record. In addition, the Orange clinched at least a share of the ACC regular season title with the win on Saturday.
"We were really able to execute our offensive plan," head coach Ange Bradley stated. "I am really proud of the kids in listening and being able to put it in place on the weekend."
Fenne scored three goals and tallied one assist on the day, becoming the first Orange to record a hat trick since freshman back Roos Weers did so against Boston University on Sept. 27. Junior forward Emma Lamison notched two goals and one assist, as well.
On the defensive end, Syracuse tallied its fifth shutout of the 2015 campaign. Senior goalkeeper Jess Jecko made one save in the contest, a spectacular diving stop in the first half. Wake Forest was held without a shot in the final 35 minutes of play.
Fenne started the scoring off early, backhanding a shot into the bottom right corner of the net four minutes into the contest. With her first tally, she has scored at least one goal in five consecutive games.
Sophomore midfielder Erin Gillingham took a pass from Fenne in the 13th minute, putting in almost the exact same spot for the second goal of the game. It marked Gillingham's third goal of the season.
In the final five minutes of the first half, the Orange exploded. Lamison picked up a loose ball in front of the net and slotted it past the Wake Forest goalkeeper in the 32nd minute to give the host club a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, Fenne took a pass from Lamison and put it in the bottom right corner for her second goal of the game.
Lamison connected with Fenne once again for the final tally of the first frame. The Orange duo broke away from the pack in the 35th minute. At the very last second, Lamison dished to Feene, who slotted it home to give the Orange a commanding 5-0 lead at halftime.
Weers put the final mark in the scorebook, scoring her 12th goal of the 2015 campaign in the 54th minute. Senior midfielder Alyssa Manley set up Weers on a penalty corner, who then hammered it home to secure the 6-0 victory for Syracuse.
The Orange concludes its regular season home slate on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Princeton at 3 p.m. The contest will be broadcast on Cuse TV. Syracuse's four seniors, Feene, Jecko, Manley, and forward Emma Russell, will be recognized prior to the start of the contest in their regular season contest at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
"This group of women is very special to me," commented Bradley. "For me, it is such a blessing to have worked with them and see their maturity throughout the years. I love these kids. It's really special. They are a great group. To have seen them grow is the best part. I am so lucky to have this job and be able to see where they started to where they are today."
