Syracuse scores most goals since 2011 in win
The No. 2 Syracuse field hockey team exploded for its largest offensive output since Oct. 16, 2011 in a 9-1 win over Cornell on Sunday.
The Orange (11-0, 3-0 ACC) saw six student-athletes score in the contest, led by Serra Degnan, Emma Lamison and Roos Weers, who each scored twice in the win.
"It's awesome to have those contributions," said head coach Ange Bradley. "It says that our offense was moving today and that people from different positions and different angles can come in and score. It also shows that people who hadn't gotten as many minutes were listening in practice and are able to come in and execute. That's really reassuring for us as we move into the second phase of our season in the month of October."
For the second time this weekend, the Orange dominated possession, out-shooting the Big Red (5-3, 1-1 IVY) 27-5.
Weers got 'Cuse off to a quick start, netting the game's first goal 6:45 into play. After Lies Lagerweij's shot was deflected, Weers buried the rebound for the opening score.
Less than three minutes later, Lamison notched her first of the day. Weers set up the play by sending a long pass to the side of the cage from 30 yards out, which Lamison knocked in.
With 59 seconds left before halftime, Krysten Mayers scored on a rebound off a corner to cut the 'Cuse lead to one heading into the locker room, but the Orange offense continued the pressure out of the break.
Five minutes after half, Degnan deflected a shot from Weers for the third goal, which kick-started an Orange attack that tallied seven goals in 23 minutes.
Lamison connected on her second of the afternoon by lifting a pass from Degnan in front of the cage with 24 minutes to play.
Two minutes later, Erin Gillingham notched her first goal of 2015 when she buried a shot off a deflection from the far side of the net.
Alma Fenne got into the act after Gillingham, when she took the ball from outside the circle, drove in and backhanded a shot into the top corner to put 'Cuse up 6-1.
Two minutes later, freshman Emma Tufts stole a pass between Cornell defenders and made the most of it, dodging goalkeeper Kelly Johnson and firing a low shot into the back of the cage. Tufts made her first-career start on the afternoon as well.
The Orange capped off the scoring with two goals in 20 seconds, beginning with Weers scoring on a penalty stroke with seven minutes to play. After Lamison was fouled in front of the net, Weers was chosen by Bradley to take the penalty stroke, calmly beating Johnson for her 10th goal of the year.
Degnan capped of the day with 6:40 to play, when she took a pass from Emma Russell in front for the ninth tally.
Vermont was the last Syracuse opponent to allow nine-or-more goals, when the Orange recorded 12 in their 2011 meeting.
Goalkeepers Jess Jecko and Regan Spencer each made a save for the Orange in the game.
In addition, Syracuse drew 10 corners to Cornell's two.
'Cuse will next hit the road to No. 9 Louisville on Friday at 6 p.m., looking to move to 4-0 in the ACC.
