SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Sophomore Alex Lamontagne of the Syracuse women's soccer team has been selected to the Canadian Women's National EXCEL Program's under-20 final roster for the upcoming CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championships to be held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, beginning December 3.
"It is a huge honor for any player to have the opportunity to represent their country," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Playing for your country and having the opportunity of qualifying for the World Cup shows a huge testament of her hard work."
Lamontagne will participate in the NEX U-20 Pre-Tournament Camp, which will run from November 24-30 in Sunrise, Fla.
At the conclusion of the camp, the official roster of 20 players will then travel to the U-20 Women's CONCACAF Championship tournament on Nov. 30. The tournament runs from December 3-13 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras where a CONCACAF champion will be crowned. Three teams will be qualified for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
As a sophomore, Lamontagne led the Orange with four goals and 10 points in 2015. She started 13-of-18 contests and was a pivotal part of the Syracuse offense. Lamontagne led the Orange past Drexel on September 17 by registering two goals in a 3-2 win over the Dragons. Later in the season, Lamontagne scored the golden goal in double overtime to send Syracuse past ACC foe Miami by a final score of 2-1.
"We wish Alex the best of luck as her team competes for a spot in the 2016 World Cup," Wheddon said. "An experience like this can only make her better and we look forward to getting her back when it's done."
