Ervin Philips and Steve Ishmael accounted for the Orange's two touchdowns. Philips' score came on a 10-yard run in the first quarter, the first rushing touchdown of his career. Ishmael's TD was on a 9-yard reception with 26 seconds left in the game and marked his team-leading fifth touchdown catch of the year.
Louisville quarterback Kyle Bolin was 24-of-35 passing for 362 yards with three touchdowns and one interception to lead a Cardinals' offense that finished with 579 total yards. Brandon Radcliff paced Louisville on the ground with a game-high 117 yards rushing on 10 carries. Jeremy Smith chipped in with 71 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
Quarterback Eric Dungey led the Orange with 45 yards on the ground. He was 15-for-30 passing for 150 yards and two interceptions. Ishmael finished with 61 yards on four receptions, while tight end Josh Parris led all Orange receivers with five catches.
Defensively, the Orange tied its season high with four takeaways. Syracuse intercepted Bolin once and recovered three Louisville fumbles. Freshman Steven Clark had two of the fumble recoveries to become the first Orange defender since Arthur Jones versus USF in 2009 to fall on two loose footballs. Cordell Hudson and Kielan Whitner set career highs with nine tackles each. Hudson intercepted the first pass of his career and Whitner was credited with his first career forced fumble.
After Louisville went 75 yards in 1:41 to take a 7-0 lead on the game's first possession, Syracuse scored 10 straight points to claim a 10-7 advantage. Philips' 10-yard touchdown run came two plays after Hudson picked off Bolin and returned the ball 18 yards to the Louisville 46. The defense forced a three-and-out on the Cardinals' next series and Dungey engineered a 16-play drive capped byCole Murphy's 36-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Louisville turned the tide late in the first half when Trumaine Washington intercepted a Dungey pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown with 5:42 to go before the intermission. Bolin followed Washington's pick-six with a 13-yard TD pass to Cole Hikutini at the 1:23 mark to make the score 21-10 Louisville at the break.
Bolin went on to throw two more touchdown passes in the second half, including another to Hikutini in the third quarter, and Johnn Wallace kicked a pair of field goals to give Louisville its biggest lead of the day at 41-10.
Syracuse put together a late scoring drive, going 38 yards on 11 plays, capped by Ishmael's touchdown on a pass from Zack Mahoney. Mahoney replaced Dungey earlier in the drive when the freshman left the game due to injury.
Mahoney was 3-for-6 passing for 27 yards.
