Coleman and Obokoh shine in 'Cuse blowout
The offense in Syracuse's 22-point victory came through the men in the middle of the vaunted Orange 2-3 zone.
Centers DaJuan Coleman and Chinoso Obokoh and forward Tyler Lydon combined for 34 points as 'Cuse led the points in the paint margin by a staggering 44-24 margin in the 82-60 win. The Orange was stingy on the defensive end as well, swatting away nine Montana State shots and collecting nine steals as well.
Coleman set the tone early for the Orange scoring six of his season-high 13 points in the first eight minutes.
"I think at the beginning of the game DaJuan was in control and it caused a problem," said assistant coach Mike Hopkins. "They were going to switch on everything and play their matchup and DaJuan did a great job of taking his time, being patient and composed. He went up, set ball screens and dove and the guys found him. As we move forward those two guys (Coleman and Obokoh) are going to be huge for us, especially as we get into ACC play."
The Jamesville, N.Y. native was only needed for 12 minutes in the contest, but they were effective, going 5-for-5 from the field, grabbing four boards and registering a block.
Obokoh was almost as efficient in just 12 minutes as well, going 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points and hauled in six boards of his own in his first action since Dec. 8 against Colgate.
"I was happy for Chinoso. He hasn't played in a while so it was nice to see him play well out there. I thought he did a nice job on the defensive end as well, and offensively he finished."
Obokoh said the stretch without seeing the floor didn't hurt him due to the competition he sees every day in practice, while keeping the mentality of always being ready.
"It felt good tonight, but I'm just trying to get better for the next game," Obokoh said. "I wasn't thinking, I was just going out to play the game and having fun and everything will flow."
Lydon led the way on the glass for the Orange with nine boards as 'Cuse owned a 48-45 advantage on the glass and scored 14 second chance points in the contest. Tyler Roberson (six) and Coleman (three) each were effective on the offensive glass for Syracuse in the win.
"The gameplan was just for me to work hard and get as many offensive rebounds as I could," Coleman said. "The six points early just happened to come and we built off that as a team. I just want to continue to get better. I felt real good out there and my body felt great. This was probably the best my body has felt all season."
Coleman and the Orange will have a few days to rest ahead of them before taking on Texas Southern in the team's final non-conference contest on Sunday at 2 p.m.
