Fondren recorded the third triple-double in SU history
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – 11,674 days. That's how many days occurred between the last two triple-doubles in Syracuse University women's basketball program history. To say the least, senior guard Cornelia Fondren's accomplished a memorable feat on Dec. 30 against Howard.
Â
Fondren etched her name into the Syracuse record books with her outstanding performance against the Bison. The Memphis, Tenn. native recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and a program-record 10 steals on the night. In the process, she became the third player in program history to record a triple-double. In addition, she became the first to do so by recording at least 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 steals.
Â
"She did everything we talk about every day," head coach Quentin Hillsman commented. "She rebounded the basketball. She extended our pressure and turned people over. In both of those areas, she was remarkable."
Â
The senior guard has proven to be a stat sheet filler prior to the contest against Howard. She scored a career-high 18 points in the team's victory against Nebraska in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, helping the Orange to its second NCAA Tournament win in program history. Fondren pulled down a personal-best 11 boards in the team's near upset at Tennessee earlier this season.
Â
The most remarkable part of her game against the Bison was her program-record 10 steals. Consistently one of the squad's top defenders, Fondren entered the week ranked fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in steals per game. She was all over the floor against Howard, matching the Syracuse single-game record set by junior guard Alexis Peterson in the season opener at Rhode Island.
Â
Fondren's accomplishment was certainly an amazing one. She joins an illustrious group that includes the program's first 1,000-point scorer and Syracuse's first all-conference honoree in Martha Mogish and Chris Palombi, respectively.
Â
If that was not enough, here is one final statistic to get the point across. Palombi tallied the last triple-double on Jan. 13, 1984 with a 20-point, 18-rebound, and 14-block performance against Georgetown. Fondren was not born for another nine years.
Â
Fondren and the Orange will return to the court on Friday afternoon when they host UTRGV. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at 1-888-DOMETIX, or by visiting the Carrier Dome box office (Gate B). The box office will be closed on Dec. 31 and open two hours prior to tipoff on Friday.
