SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 3/2 Syracuse had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 10-9 setback to No. 7/6 Boston College in the Carrier Dome on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Orange is now 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in ACC play.
Â
The contest was close throughout and featured six ties. The teams went into the locker room at halftime tied at 5-5 before Boston College (4-0, 1-0) took its first lead of the game on Mikaela Rix's goal 1:55 into the second half. Syracuse answered when junior Taylor Gait worked her way through the Eagles' defense and found the back of the net for her second goal of the day. Boston College regained the lead on Caroline Margolis' goal, one of four on the day, but the Orange again responded when junior Lisa Rogers scored on an assist from junior Erica Bodt  with 20:57 remaining.
Â
The teams again traded goals before Boston College netted back-to-back goals to take its largest lead of the game at 10-8 with 1:28 remaining. The Orange won the ensuing draw and freshman Riley Donahue found the back of the net as she was being pushed to the ground to cut the deficit to one with 28 seconds on the clock. Boston College won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock for its first victory against the Orange in 13 tries.
Â
"That was a tough team and we give them credit," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "They stuck it out and won a close game. We're still trying to find our identity with the roster we have and who is going to do what. We got to experience a very good shutoff on the offensive end and we turned around and made some mistakes and gave them the ball for a while and you don't see it for another five minutes. They definitely controlled the game and played at their pace."
Â
The first half featured back and forth action as neither team could pull away. Junior Halle Majorana started the scoring 1:05 in the game. A minute later, Gait scored and senior Kailah Kempney converted a free position attempt to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead at the 27:18 mark. Boston College responded with three straight goals, including two by Sarah Mannelly, to even the score at the 18:20 mark. The teams traded goals before Majorana's second goal of the half put Syracuse up by one with 12:54 on the clock. The score remained that way until Covie Stanwick tallied the final goal of the half with 23 seconds remaining as the team were tied, 5-5, at intermission.
Â
Boston College outshot Syracuse, 20-16, and picked up 11 ground balls to eight for the Orange. SU won 13-of-21 draw controls. Syracuse goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson recorded four saves, while Zoe Ochoa had three for Boston College.
Â
Syracuse goes on the road for the first time next weekend to face No. 1 Maryland in a rematch of last year's national championship game. Opening draw in College Park on Saturday, March 7 is set for 12 p.m.Â
