Jocelyn Cater struck out 15 in 11 innings of work on Saturday
ROSEMONT, Ill. – There's no question that softball players need a short memory to succeed on the diamond. Good hitters only succeed just 30% of the time, pitchers grind through at-bat after at-bat and fielders never know when the ball will be coming to them next after making an error. Just two days into the season it appears Jocelyn Cater benefits from a short memory.
Â
In the latter game on Friday, Cater was knocked around for six runs in six innings but still kept Syracuse in the fight as the Orange's comeback fell short to Miami (OH), 6-4. In Syracuse's first contest against Samford it appeared as though the same thing was going to happen, except this time it was Sydney O'Hara in the circle and Cater was called upon in the fourth to keep 'Cuse in the game.
Â
Cater not only kept Syracuse in the fight, the southpaw was dominant, striking out nine batters and only allowing three hits in just four innings of work. The Orange came back to tie the game but a called ball after just missing the outside corner walked home the winning run.
Â
She was given the nod the next game as well but this time she was nearly lights out all seven innings. The native out of Canada allowed only one walk while striking out six and allowing a two-run shot that tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. She remained focused in the seventh, shutting down the Chippewas after Sammy Fernandez scored the go-ahead run. Cater allowed just two runs and one walk while striking out six in seven innings.
Â
With her 15 strikeouts, three runs allowed and three walks in 11 innings today, Cater drops her earned run average to 3.71 and owns a 1-2 record this season.
