SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Top-ranked Syracuse (6-0, 1-0 ACC) welcomes No. 4 Duke (7-1, 0-0 ACC) to the Carrier Dome for just the second time when it hosts the Blue Devils in a 12:30 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference game on Sunday, March 22. The Orange already has one ACC win under its belt, a 15-9 victory against Virginia. Sunday's game is Duke's ACC opener.
At 6-0, the Orange is one of three remaining unbeaten teams in Division I lacrosse after holding off Johns Hopkins for a 13-10 victory last weekend. North Carolina and Marquette are the other unbeatens.
The Blue Devils have won five straight since losing to Denver on Feb. 14, including a 15-13 triumph at Georgetown last Saturday.
RECENT KINGS OF LACROSSE
Syracuse and Duke have dominated college lacrosse since 2008. The two programs have combined to win five of the last seven NCAA championships and rank first and second for the most wins and highest winning percentage during that span.
The Orange brought home back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. Duke won the crown in 2010, 2013 and 2014.Â
Duke has a streak of eight consecutive Final Four appearances, reaching the national semifinals every year since 2007. The Orange has made three Final Fours since 2008.
In 2013, Syracuse and Duke met for the national championship for the first time. The Blue Devils emerged victorious, 16-10, to capture their second title.
STRONG STARTS
Syracuse improved to 6-0 with its win against Johns Hopkins on March 14. The Orange's last 6-0 start to a season was in 2011 when SU opened the year with nine straight victories.
Since John Desko became head coach in 1999, SU has started 6-0 three times (2000, 2011, 2015). The Orange has started at least 7-0 under Desko twice (2000, 2011). In 2000, the Orange opened the year with seven wins and captured the national championship.
SCOUTING DUKE
Duke boasts one of the most explosive offenses in the nation. The Blue Devils are third nationally in scoring offense (16.0 gpg), fourth in points (24.9 ppg) and fifth in assists (8.9 apg).
Myles Jones is on pace for one of the most productive seasons in NCAA history for a midfielder. He leads the ACC with 45 points, including a team-high 21 assists. His 5.63 points-per-game average is fifth in the nation.
Freshman attackman Justin Guterding is the team's primary finisher. Guterding ranks sixth in the country in goals per game (3.38). He has 27 goals on the season.
Gone is faceoff specialist Brendan Fowler, but Duke has reloaded at that position with senior Jack Rowe. Rowe has a team-high 70 ground balls and lists 12th nationally with a .600 faceoff winning percentage (114-190).Â
The Duke defense has given up at least 13 goals four times in eight games. The Blue Devils own an overall goals-against average of 10.75. Shortstick defensive midfielder Will Haus (22 ground balls, 6 caused turnovers) and goalie Luke Aaron (79 saves, .520 save pct.) are the mainstays of the Duke defense.
Coach John Danowski has guided Duke to the Final Four every year he's been in Durham. He has won three national championships and four ACC Tournament titles. Danowski is second among active Division I coaches with 354 career wins.
THE DUKE SERIES
SU holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series against Duke. The Orange won six of the first seven meetings, including five in a row from 1992-2011.
Sunday's game marks Duke's first trip to the Dome since the 1994 NCAA quarterfinals. The Orange defeated the Blue Devils by one in that game, 12-11, behind three goals apiece from Dom Finn and Jim Morrissey.
Duke has won four of the last five pairings dating back to 2012. In the 2014 ACC semifinals, Dylan Donahue stopped Duke's four-game series winning streak by scoring at the buzzer to lift the Orange to a 16-15 win.
UP NEXT
The Orange heads to Notre Dame for its first true away game of the 2015 season. The Orange and Irish square off Saturday, March 28 at noon on ESPNU.
