SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The two top-ranked teams in Division I lacrosse square off when No. 1 Syracuse (7-0, 2-0 ACC) visits No. 2 Notre Dame (5-1, 1-0 ACC) for an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown on Saturday, March 28 at noon in Arlotta Stadium.
The Orange is the only unbeaten team in the nation. Syracuse owns an average margin of victory of +7.7 goals per game and is fresh off a 19-7 dismantling of Duke last weekend. Notre Dame blanked Ohio State, 9-0, on March 21 to record the second shutout in program history.
BEST AGAINST THE BEST
Saturday's game marks the 15th time since the USILA Coaches Poll was introduced in 1973 that Syracuse has been part of a game featuring the nation's top two ranked teams. The Orange is 4-10* in those previous 14 contests with two of those victories coming under current head John Desko (2000 at Virginia, 2011 vs. Virginia).
The last time Syracuse played under this scenario was in 2011 when the Orange and Virginia shared the No. 1 ranking. SU emerged victorious in that game, 12-10, behind five goals by Tim Desko.
* NOTE: Record includes two games where Syracuse and its opponent shared the No. 1 ranking.
THEY STAND ALONE
Syracuse and Notre Dame are the only two schools that rank in the top 10 nationally in both scoring offense and defense. The Orange is averaging 15.43 goals per game (3rd) and allowing 7.71 (9th). The Irish average 13.5 goals per contest (9th) and give up 7.5 (8th). SU's +7.71 scoring margin is the best in Division I lacrosse.
ADJUSTING TO THE ACC
SU owns a four-game conference winning streak with consecutive victories against the other four current ACC members — Notre Dame (2014), North Carolina (2014), Virginia (2015) and Duke (2015).
The Orange went 0-3 in league play upon joining the ACC in 2014 and was outscored in those games, 54-27. SU has flipped the script since, outscoring its ACC foes, 56-36, during the current winning streak.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
Notre Dame features a stingy defense. The Irish are eighth nationally and lead the ACC in scoring defense (7.5 goals per game). Reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Week Shane Doss made 11 saves in the Irish's 9-0 shutout of Ohio State last weekend. Doss is third nationally in goals-against average (6.95) and fourth in save percentage (.611).
Offensively, Notre Dame is averaging 13.5 goals per game and tops the country in extra-man efficiency (.667, 10-15). The attack duo of junior Matt Kavanagh (13 goals, 14 assists) and freshman Mikey Wynne (19 goals, 1 assist) have combined for 47 points and 32 goals. Kavanagh is fifth in the ACC in scoring (4.5 ppg) and assists (2.33 per game). Wynne is eighth in the country and third in the conference in goals (3.17 per game).
Sergio Perkovic (12 goals, 4 assists) is ND's leading midfield scorer. Perkovic had two goals against the Orange in last year's ACC championship game.
Head coach Kevin Corrigan is in his 27th season at Notre Dame and owns a 258-121 (.681) record with the Irish. Overall, he is 268-136 (.663) in 29 seasons as a college head coach. Corrigan ranks ninth among active Division I coaches in winning percentage and sixth in victories. He's guided the Irish to the Final Four three times in the last five years.
THE NOTRE DAME SERIES
SU is 8-2 all-time against Notre Dame and is 1-1 against the Irish at Arlotta Stadium. The Orange won the first five games in the series, including a 12-6 triumph in 2010 in the first night game ever played at Arlotta.
Saturday's game is a rematch of last year's ACC title game, won by the Irish 15-14. The loss ended Syracuse's three-game series winning streak. Notre Dame attackman Matt Kavanagh had four goals and two assists in the contest on his way to tournament MVP honors.
UP NEXT
Syracuse steps out of conference for a matchup with America East foe Albany on Thursday, April 2. Start time is 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
