Special Halftime Ceremony Planned for Albany Game
3/30/2015 11:15:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men's lacrosse team will celebrate its deep connection to the Native American community and the sport of lacrosse on Thursday, April 2 during its game against Albany.
Â
At halftime, the program will honor former All-American goalie and 2015 Spirit of Tewaaraton Award recipient Oren Lyons, members of the 1957 Syracuse Orange lacrosse team, and members of the 1983 and 2014 Iroquois Nationals in an on-field tribute.
Â
Lyons, who named this year's Spirit of Tewaaraton Award winner in January, and fellow National Lacrosse Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Roy Simmons Jr. led the Orange to a 10-0 record in 1957. It was the second perfect season in team history and the Orange tied Maryland for national runner-up honors behind USILA collegiate champion Johns Hopkins.
Â
The 1983 Iroquois Nationals were the nation's first competitive field lacrosse team and participated in an event called "Lacrosse International" in Baltimore. Organized by Simmons Jr., who was by then head coach of the Orange, "Lacrosse International" featured exhibitions between Division I champion Syracuse, Division III champion Hobart, the Canadian National Team and the Iroquois.
Â
Thirty-one years after the 1983 team paved the way, the 2014 Iroquois Nationals won the nation's first world championship medal. Featuring several current and former Syracuse stars, the Iroquois won bronze at last year's Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship by defeating Australia.
Â
Former Orange All-Americans Cody Jamieson, Sid Smith, Jeremy Thompson and Brett Bucktooth captained the team, while current SU standouts Randy Staats and Warren Hill played key roles in the Iroquois historic achievement. Staats had 13 goals and eight assists in the tournament. Hill was the team's starting goalie and made 69 saves.
Â
Albany star attackman Lyle Thompson was the Iroquois second-leading scorer and was named to the All-World Team.
Â
Tickets for Thursday's game are $10 for adults and $5 for children. They can be purchased online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
