No. 2 North Carolina Defeats No. 7 Orange

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 2/2 North Carolina defeated No. 7/6 Syracuse, 15-8, in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday, April 11. The Orange is now 9-6 overall, 2-4 in ACC play, while the Tar Heels improve to 12-2, 5-1 in conference action.

Senior Kayla Treanor started the scoring with a free position goal 2:17 into the contest. Maggie Bill tied the score before junior Caroline Webster picked up a ground ball and started a fast break which ended with Webster's first career goal on an assist from freshman Riley Donahue. Sydney Holman again tied the score and started a 4-0 scoring run that gave the Tar Heels a 5-2 lead with 10:38 on the clock.

Senior Gabby Jaquith ended Syracuse's scoring drought of more than 15 minutes with a free position goal at the 5:25 mark, but North Carolina recorded the final two goals of the half to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Junior Halle Majorana started the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 7-4. Marie McCool answered for North Carolina with her only goal of the game, which started a 5-0 scoring run that gave the Tar Heels their largest lead of the game at 12-4 with 18:06 remaining. Majorana halted the North Carolina offensive outburst and ended Syracuse's scoring drought of more than 12 minutes when she found the back of the net at the 15:33 mark. With Syracuse trailing, 13-5, Treanor recorded an unassisted goal before senior Loren Ziegler netted back-to-back goals for her first multi-goal game of her career, cutting the deficit to 13-8 with 4:39 remaining. That was as close as Syracuse could get as North Carolina recorded the final two goals of the game for the 15-8 final.

The Tar Heels outshot Syracuse, 32-25, and won 14-of-25 draw controls. Both teams picked up 25 ground balls. Syracuse goalkeeper Kelsey Richardson reached double figures in saves for the fourth time this season with 10, while Caylee Waters and Megan Ward combined for nine for North Carolina.

Syracuse's road swing continues when it travels to Louisville on Thursday, April 16 for its final ACC regular-season game at 2 p.m.
