Mary Dombrowski enjoyed the best series of her career against Pitt this weekend
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Mary Dombrowski is known for a few things on the Syracuse softball team. If you asked her teammates, some of them may say she's known for her athleticism, speed on the base paths, a quick release and a rocket arm. Some may say she's known for her leadership, her mental toughness and her ability to connect with anyone as a teammate.
Pitt will remember her as someone its pitchers simply do not have an answer for.
The 'Cuse vs. Pitt three-game series of 2015 - Dombrowski's senior season – will be a series she will never forget.
Dombrowski finished the weekend with six hits in nine at-bats giving her a .667 batting average in the series. The performance at the plate boosted her batting average 69 points. Add two walks to her line and it gives her a .727 on-base percentage in the series and a .327 on-base percentage on the season.
Of her six hits, three went for extra bases. Two landed on the other side of the outfield fence and one ricocheted off the fence for a double. The power display gives her a remarkable 1.222 slugging percentage in the three-game stretch and boosts her season percentage to .357.
Combine her slugging percentage on the weekend with her on-base percentage and that gives her an astounding 1.949 OPS. She now has a .686 OPS in 2015.
Of the 20 runs Syracuse scored in the Pitt series, Dombrowski knocked in eight of them. On the base paths, she doubled her season total with six runs scored. To put it in simpler terms, she was clutch.
She was nearly unstoppable in pressure situations. With runners on base, seldom did she not come through, recording five hits in seven at-bats. With runners in scoring position she picked up base knocks in four of her five opportunities.
When Syracuse was facing the end of its half inning, she was perfect. She had the bat in her hands with two outs three times, all three times resulted in runs for the Orange.
In game one, Dombrowski launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to pull within two runs of the Panthers. In game three, all of her RBIs came with two outs. In the first she roped a single through the left side to give 'Cuse a 1-0 lead and in the fifth she crushed another three-run home run to give the Orange a 5-4 lead.
This isn't the first time the senior centerfielder has terrorized Pitt's pitching staff either, as its struggles with Dombrowski span her entire career at Syracuse. In her time between the lines for the Orange she's 9-for-18 (.500) against the Panthers with eight runs scored and 12 runs batted in. Four of her nine hits have gone for extra bases and three of them are home runs, giving her a 1.056 slugging percentage. Add four walks to the equation and she has a .590 career on-base percentage against Pitt.
With all of that said... It's fair to say Pittsburgh will be relieved when it prepares for a Syracuse team without No. 1 in the lineup in 2016.
