SYRACUSE, N.Y. – One of lacrosse's oldest rivalries heats up when the fourth-ranked Orange meets Hobart in a 7 p.m. contest at the Carrier Dome Tuesday, April 14. The match is the 101st meeting in a series that dates back to the first year of varsity lacrosse at Syracuse. The Statesmen are the Orange's oldest rival as Hobart was Syracuse's first-ever varsity opponent back on April 29, 1916.Â
Syracuse enters the game with an 8-2 record after losing for the second time in three games Saturday at North Carolina. The Statesmen are 7-3 and winners of four in a row.
SENIOR NIGHT AT THE DOME
Sixteen members of the Orange program will be honored prior to the Hobart game in a short ceremony as part of Senior Night.Â
Brenny Daly, Dylan Donahue, Nicky Galasso, Tom Grimm, Mike Iacono, Hakeem Lecky, Peter Macartney, Niko Manning, Mike Messina, Kevin Rice, Henry Schoonmaker, Randy Staats, Chris Swanson, Bobby Tait, Bobby Wardwell and Sean Young will all be introduced individually before faceoff.Â
As a group, they have won three conference championships (one regular-season, two tournament) and helped the Orange to three NCAA appearances, including a berth in the 2013 national championship game. The 2015 senior class owns an overall record of 44-19.
THE KRAUS-SIMMONS TROPHY
The Kraus-Simmons Trophy has been presented to the victor in this annual showdown every year since 1986. The trophy is named for legendary Orange head coach Roy Simmons Sr., who coached at SU from 1931-70 and won 253 career games, and Babe Kraus who compiled 208 victories at Hobart.
Syracuse has won 26 of the 29 meetings since the trophy has been awarded, including 20 in a row from 1987 to 2005. The Statesmen gained possession of the trophy in 1986, 2006 and 2013. Otherwise it has resided in Syracuse.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Of the 69 Division I lacrosse teams, three have not lost an out-of-conference game this season and SU is one of them. The Orange is 6-0 in non-league action. The other two non-conference unbeatens are Virginia (8-0) and Yale (6-0).
Since joining the ACC, the Orange is 14-1 versus non-conference foes with its only loss coming against Bryant (10-9) in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Championship.
DONAHUE NEEDS ONE GOAL FOR 100
Dylan Donahue has 99 goals in 46 games (2.2). His next tally will make him the 23rd player in school history to score 100 goals and the first to do so since Stephen Keogh totaled 133 goals from 2008-11.
SCOUTING HOBART
Hobart has won several close games this season. The Statesmen are 4-0 in one-goal games and three of their last four victories have been 7-6 decisions in overtime.
Alex Love leads the Statesmen in goals (19) and points (24). Love notched the deciding goal in back-to-back overtime victories versus Bryant and Robert Morris in March.
Hobart features a stingy defense, only surrendering 8.5 goals per game and boasts the nation's sixth-ranked, man-down unit (.760). The Statesmen have only given up six extra-man goals so far this season.
Goalie Jackson Brown is eighth nationally in save percentage (.576) and 14th in saves per game (11.4). Brown has 114 saves and sports an 8.35 goals-against average. Â
Head coach Greg Raymond is in his second year with the Statesmen. He owns a 12-13 record. Raymond was the defensive coordinator at Princeton for four years before taking the reins at Hobart. He also spent one season as an assistant coach at Drexel.
THE HOBART SERIES
The Orange began its varsity lacrosse history with a 9-1 loss at home to Hobart on April 29, 1916. Since then, it has dominated the series thanks to some lengthy winning streaks and holds a 72-26-2 advantage in the rivalry. SU won 10 in a row against Hobart from 1930 to 1936, 11 straight from 1952 to 1963 and a series-best 19 in a row from 1987 to 2005.
UP NEXT
Syracuse is guaranteed the No. 3 seed in the ACC Championship. The Orange will face either Notre Dame or North Carolina in the semifinals Friday, April 24 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.
