Syracuse takes on the 2015 national semifinalist in its third Big Ten/ACC Challenge
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's basketball team will travel to 2015 national semifinalist Maryland in the 2015 Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten announced on Wednesday morning. Syracuse and Maryland will meet on Wednesday, Dec. 2 in the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.
Â
Last season, Syracuse made its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, a program-first. The Orange won its first-round contest for the second year in-a-row, defeating Nebraska. In total, Syracuse finished the 2014-15 season with a 22-10 overall record and 11-5 mark in ACC action. The program recorded its highest ranking in the Associated Press Poll in program history in 2014-15, following an 8-1 start to the year. Syracuse checked in at No. 19 nationally, one spot shy of matching its highest appearance in either major national poll.
Â
Maryland advanced to the Final Four for the second straight year in 2014-15, a first in school history. The Terrapins ultimately lost to 2015 national champion Connecticut in the national semifinals. On the year, Maryland finished with a 34-3 overall record and coasted to a Big Ten crown in its first season of competition, going 18-0 in league games. Currently, Maryland has won its past 23 games in the XFINITY Center, with its last home loss coming on Jan. 27, 2014.
Â
Syracuse and Maryland will meet for the fifth time in history on Dec. 2. The Terrapins have won all four of the previous meetings against the Orange. In the teams' last matchup, Maryland scored an 89-64 victory at the Carrier Dome on Feb. 2, 2014.
Â
The Orange will be participating in its third Big Ten/ACC Challenge in 2015. Syracuse owns a 1-1 record in the battle between the two conferences, defeating Penn State in 2014 and losing to Iowa in its first competition in 2013.
Â
The ACC and the Big Ten have long been among the most competitive conferences on the women's basketball scene. Since 1982, current members of the ACC (20) and the Big Ten (14) have combined for 34 berths in the Final Four and have combined for 420 total appearances in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.
Â
Last season, the ACC sent 11 teams to postseason play, including a league-record tying eight teams in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship – the most of any conference this year. Notre Dame earned a No. 1 seed and advanced to the Final Four for the seventh time in program history. The Big Ten had eight teams in postseason play and saw Maryland earn a berth in the Final Four.
Â
Game times, as well as television coverage, will be announced at a later date.
