Three Syracuse crews win their respective finals on Sunday morning
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The No. 19 Syracuse University men's rowing team competed in the finals of the 113th Annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta on Sunday morning on Mercer Lake. Syracuse finished in 19th place in the first varsity eight competition, the main event of the national championship.
Â
"I think if you are in a lower-level final it is a bit of character test," head coach Dave Reischman stated. "When you are in the grand final, everybody is happy to be there and everybody is excited. When you are in the lower levels, there are always two or three crews that are disappointed that they aren't in an upper-level final. Character comes in when you are able to get over that disappointment and race hard. I think our crews did that today."
Â
In the fourth-level final of the varsity eight competition, Syracuse came out victorious, good enough for 19th place overall. The Orange covered the 2,000 meter course on Mercer Lake in 5:45.101. Entering the national championship competition, Syracuse was seeded 19th overall, holding its seeding.
Â
After not racing on Saturday, the third varsity eight boat finished in first place in the third-level final. Syracuse defeated the field by more than two seconds. With its first-place showing in the third-level final, the Orange placed 13th overall in the third varsity eight race.
Â
The second varsity eight crew competed in the third-level final, as well. Syracuse finished in fourth place in its final, recording a time of 5:57.304. The Orange placed 16th overall in the event at the national championship.
Â
In the final race of the day, the varsity four crew placed first in the third-level final. Syracuse defeated second-place Penn by more than two seconds, covering the course in 6:35.312. With its first-place showing in the third-level final, the varsity four crew placed 13th overall.
Â
With the conclusion of the IRA Championship Regatta, the 2015 Syracuse men's rowing season has been completed. The Orange was ranked in the top 20 of the USRowing Collegiate Poll all season and has appeared in the rankings in 80 consecutive releases.Â
