Day 1 Release | Day 2 Release
Another night, another two All-Americans for the Syracuse track and field program, making seven student-athletes to earn the distinction while an eighth earned honorable mention honors at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Â
The seven All-Americans is the most in over 40 years for the program, capping off a historic year for head coach Chris Fox and his program. The men's distance group posted best cross country finish in nearly 60 years (fifth place) after successfully defending their ACC Championship, Martin Hehir earning First Team All-America honors during the indoor campaign and four student-athletes collecting ACC Championships between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Â
Justyn Knight became the second First Team All-America in as many nights (following Margo Malone's seventh-place finish in the 10k on Thursday) for the Orange after taking sixth in the men's 5,000-meters. Redshirt freshman Colin Bennie was right on the true freshman Knight's heels taking 14th.
Â
Knight hung near the front of the race for the duration of the race, including becoming part of a seven-race break in the final two laps. Edward Cheserek of Oregon took the race after winning the sprint down the home stretch, but Knight finished just over two seconds behind in a time of 13:50.96.
Â
Bennie posted a time of 14:12.88 after closing strong down the final stretch to hold off the final push from those chasing behind.
Knight and Bennie join Malone (First Team; 10,000-meters), Hehir (Second Team; 10,000-meters), Dan Lennon (Second Team; 10,000-meters), Freddie Crittenden (Second Team; 110-meter hurdles) and Donald Pollitt (Second Team; 110-meter hurdles) in earning All-America honors for the Orange. Max Straneva was also named an Honorable Mention All-American after taking 18th in the 10,000-meters on Wednesday.
Tonight's race concludes the outdoor track and field season for the No. 22 ranked men's program, which also cracked the USTFCCCA top-20 for the first time in the history of the program this year.
