SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's basketball program has achieved great success since its inception in 1971. Over the next two weeks, Cuse.com will spotlight a select alumna from the Syracuse women's basketball program daily.
Â
In the second Cuse.com Alumnae Spotlight, we look at Sue Ludwig.
Past spotlights:
Janice Long
Â
Ludwig was on the Syracuse women's basketball team from 1984-88. She helped the Orange reach the NCAA Tournament twice in her collegiate career, the first coming in 1985 and second in 1988. Ludwig joined Vera Jones, Felisha Legette, and Melissa Zagorites as the first Orange to play in two NCAA Tournaments in their collegiate careers.
Â
As a freshman, Ludwig played in every contest, becoming a starter 18 games into the season. She averaged 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as a rookie. Syracuse went on to win the 1985 BIG EAST Championship title and advance to its first NCAA Tournament in program history.
Â
The Whitehall, Pa. native enjoyed a spectacular sophomore campaign in 1985-86. Ludwig averaged 11.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per contest for the Orange in her second season on campus. Her 158 assists on the 1985-86 season still ranks sixth in Syracuse single-season history.
Â
As a junior, Ludwig began to establish herself as one of the premier players in the BIG EAST Conference. She improved her scoring average to 12.6 points per game and swiped 83 steals on the year, which ranks sixth in SU single-season history. For her efforts on the court, Ludwig was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Â
Ludwig put an exclamation point on her career with a fine senior season. For the third straight season, she averaged at least 10 points per game, scoring 10.6 points per contest. Ludwig registered 159 assists on the year, which ranks fifth in program history. An All-BIG EAST First Team honoree, Ludwig led the Orange to its second NCAA Tournament appearance in four years.
Â
For her career, Ludwig scored 1,214 points, which ranks 13th in program history. She knocked down 306 free throws in four years, which ranks seventh in SU history. Her 529 career assists and 254 career steals both rank fourth in school history, as well.
