Ranking caps historic year for 'Cuse cross country and track programs
The Syracuse men's cross country and track and field program finished the 2014-15 year ranked No. 15 in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings, which encompasses the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
In order to be ranked in the standings, a program must earn points at each of the three NCAA Championships for the sports. This is just the second time the Orange has been ranked in the year-end standings, which began in 2008.
'Cuse sits as the third-highest ranked program amongst ACC schools, behind Virginia (No. 5) and Florida State (No. 10).
Oregon, who finished right behind the Orange at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in sixth place, was named the USTFCCCA Men's Program of the Year following their Outdoor Track and Field National Championship last week.
Syracuse finished fifth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the program's best finish since 1957 on the heels of winning its second-straight ACC Championship and fifth conference title in six seasons. Syracuse peaked at No. 2 in the USTFCCCA poll – its best ranking ever – and head coach Chris Fox earned ACC and USTFCCCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year honors for the team's performance.
Martin Hehir continued his cross country success into the indoor campaign, by earning First Team All-America honors in the 3,000-meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships after he finished seventh in the event. Hehir also won an ACC Championship in the 5k and earned meet MVP honors.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships had more Orange flavor, with eight student-athletes – the most in over 30 years for the program – reaching nationals and all-eight receiving recognition on All-America teams. Margo Malone and Justyn Knight earned first team honors, Colin Bennie, Hehir, Dan Lennon, Freddie Crittenden and Donald Pollitt gaining second team accolades and Max Straneva receiving honorable mention honors.
