Former 'Cuse standout highlights group of four new quality control coaches for 2015
Former Syracuse standout and nine-year NFL veteran Steve Gregory will return to his alma mater to serve as a special teams quality control coach.
Gregory highlights the crop of four new quality control coaches along with Jesse Johnson, Bart Tanski, Christopher Kirkpatrick and Joe Furco in joining the Syracuse coaching staff for the 2015 season.
Gregory posted 357 tackles and seven interceptions as a defensive back for the Chargers and Patriots in his NFL career that amassed 111 career games. He started at corner for three seasons as a member of the Orange and also at wide receiver as a junior.
Johnson joins the 'Cuse staff after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at Central Michigan for the past two seasons after previously coaching at the Citadel and playing at Michigan State. Johnson helped lead the Chippewas to the top-ranked defense in the MAC and worked extensively with the punt and punt return units. He will be a defensive quality control coach with the Orange.
Tanski, the other defensive quality control coach, comes to Syracuse from the University of Findlay, where he oversaw the wide receivers and served as a scout team coordinator. A quarterback and wide receiver at Bowling Green, Tanski played for the Falcons from 2008-13 after being named Ohio's Mr. Football in 2007. He was a team captain at Bowling Green during his senior year.
Kirkpatrick will work on the offensive side of the ball as a quality control coach. He comes to Syracuse from Hoffman Estates High School, where he was the varsity offensive line coach and substitute eacher. In 2013 and 2014, he was a graduate a graduate assistant at North Central College, mentoring the offensive line and tight ends. At North Central, Kirkpatrick mentored four all-conference, three to all-region accolades and one All-American. The Cardinals ranked fourth nationally in 2013, advancing to the National Semifinals, and 15th in 2014 and posted a 21-3 overall record during his tenure. A three-year starter for Elmhurst College at center, he earned 2012 D3Football.com All-North Region Team honors. A 2012 Capital One Academic All-District selection, Kirkpatrick earned his bachelor's degree in history, with a minor in social studies, from Elmhurst in 2013 and a Master's in sports leadership in 2015.
Furco will be an offensive quality control coach for the Orange and joins the program after assisting with wide receivers and running backs at Loras College for the past two seasons where he helped lead the receiving corps to set nine school records and mentored the IIAC leader in four different statistical categories. A 2013 graduate of Elmhurst College, Furco was a four year starter at quarterback and led the Blue Jays to a CCIW Championship and the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2012. He's the program's all-time leader in touchdown passes, completion percentage, passing yardage among other statistical categories.
The five newcomers to the staff will join returning quality control coach Alvah Hansboro and offensive graduate assistant Pat Reilly, who were on the staff in 2014, and replace Austin King, Chris Gould, Siriki Diabate and Michael Ghobrial. The four quality control and graduate assistant coaches who departed the staff following this season continued the tradition of success amongst young coaches at Syracuse in the six years since head coach Scott Shafer joined the Orange, upping the total to 15 former quality control coaches or graduate assistants holding positions in college football or the NFL.
"We're proud of the young coaches who have come through our program and are moving through the collegiate and professional ranks," Shafer said. "We all started somewhere and I'm proud that Syracuse is part of the foundation for this exceptional group of coaches and people."
Gould went on to coach specialists for the Denver Broncos, King will be coaching the offensive line at Dayton, Ghobrial will be overseeing the defensive line at Colorado Mesa and Diabate will stay local, coaching safeties at Colgate.
Diabate joins another Shafer disciple on the Raiders staff, Brent Bassham, who is coaching wide receivers there.
Nick Sanchez is coaching in New York, after a stint as an associate head coach at Ave Maria Univeristy in Florida, Sanchez is now coaching corners at Albany.
Another staff with multiple Syracuse ties is the Buffalo Bills, former offensive quality control coach Jason Vrable is in the same position with the organization and former defensive quality control coach Jascon Rebrovich is an assistant defensive line coach for what was one of the NFL's highest ranking defenses last season.
A third member of the Shafer coaching tree is also in the NFL, with Evan Rothstein is an offensive assistant with the Detroit Lions.
Cody Catalina, who played tight end for the Orange from 2007-10 before joining the staff is now an offensive graduate assistant at Maryland.
A member of the 2013 staff, Jason Onuebuagu now is the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at North Carolina Central.
In addition, Mike Muehling is currently the head coach at Hudson Valley Community College.
