O'Shaughnessy-Hunter earns third honor of his career
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Eight members of the Syracuse University men's rowing team earned Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) All-Academic honors for the 2015 season, the IRA announced on June 25.
Â
Seniors Andrew Festa, Chris Nedlik, Patrick O'Shaughnessy-Hunter, juniors David Conroy, Ryan McCarry, Bryce Vanderberg, and sophomores Andrew Reichard and Alexander Will all earned IRA All-Academic accolades. It marked the second straight season Conroy had earned such merits and was the third honor of O'Shaughnessy-Hunter's career.
Â
Festa held a seat in the second varsity eight boat for the entire spring season. From the bow position, he guided the Orange to a 16th-place showing at the 2015 IRA Championship Regatta in May. A standout in the classroom, Festa participated in the Dubai Contracting Company Syracuse University-Lebanese American University Internship Program, as well.
Â
Nedlik, a Binghamton, N.Y. native, rowed in the fourth varsity eight boat until the postseason, when he made the switch to the varsity four crew. One of two seniors in the boat, Nedlik helped the Orange to a 13th-place finish at the IRA Regatta.
Â
O'Shaughnessy-Hunter, the team's captain for the 2015 season, was a constant in the first varsity eight boat for Syracuse. The Brockville, Ontario native pushed the team to a 19th-place showing at the IRA Regatta, helping the Orange hold its seeding in the process.
Â
Conroy sat in the third varsity eight boat in every race during the spring season. The Lakewood, Ohio native and the third varsity eight crew placed 13th at the IRA Regatta in May. Conroy and O'Shaughnessy-Hunter were the only two members of the team to earn repeat honors.
Â
McCarry primarily held a spot on the first varsity eight boat, racing with the second varsity eight crew in the final competition of the year. The Landsdowne, Pa. product joined Festa in the second varsity eight boat at the national championship, helping the crew to a 16th-place finish.
Â
Vanderberg was a member of the second varsity crew for all of the spring season, except the final race of the year. The Belmont, Mich. native joined the Orange's top boat for the IRA Regatta, helping the team place 19th nationally. Â
Â
In his second year on the water with Syracuse, Reichard rowed with the second varsity eight boat until the postseason. The Lyndhurst, Ohio product moved into the first varsity eight crew for the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Men's Sprints and IRA Regatta, stroking the boat.
Â
Will rowed in the second varsity eight boat in every race during the spring season, holding down the fourth and seventh positions.
Â
To be eligible for such honors, student-athletes must be of sophomore standing, sustained 3.35 cumulative grade point average, and participated in the 2015 IRA Championship Regatta.
