Weers and Lamison score to give Syracuse a 1-0 start to the season
The No. 4 Syracuse field hockey team took down No. 6 Stanford 2-1 in overtime behind an 22-5 shots advantage in the contest.
Â
The Orange tallied a goal in the eighth minute and jumped to a 1-0 lead and controlled the game by jumping out to a 16-1 shots advantage before the closing moments. However Stanford rallied to even the score at one late.
Syracuse weathered the late storm and later took control in overtime, netting the eventual game-winning goal after a converting off a short corner to move to 1-0 on the year.
"It was great to get the year started with a win, and get an opportunity to practice overtime," said head coach Ange Bradley. "We would have liked to get it done in regulation, but the kids were able to find a way to get it done. There are some things that we did well tonight and there are things that we need to continue to get better at as well, but we were able to survive."
A pair of newcomers put the Orange on the board as sophomore Roos Weers buried a pass from Alma Fenne in the eighth-minute of play to put the Orange up 1-0.
'Cuse maintained the possession for the majority of regulation, mounting a 16-1 shots advantage before the Cardinal rallied for the equalizer.
It was another new member of the Orange who scored the eventual game-winner as Emma Lamison found the back of the cage after a flurry in front of the net to end the game with just over one minute remaining in the first overtime period.
Â
Syracuse also had a number of chances late in the game, with Weers hitting the crossbar and Stanford goalkeeper Dulcie Davies making a number of saves.
Â
Syracuse owned a 16-1 advantage on corners in the contest and Jess Jecko madefour saves for the Orange.
Â
Syracuse will have a short time to enjoy the win as the Orange is scheduled to take on UC Davis on Saturday at 7 p.m. eastern.
