Dungey named Rookie of the Week, Whigham tabbed co-Defensive Back of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The duo of freshman quarterback Eric Dungey and senior cornerback Julian Whigham were recognized by the Atlantic Coast Coast Conference on Monday, Sept. 14 for their performances in Saturday's 30-17 win against Wake Forest.
Â
Dungey was named the ACC Rookie of the Week after tossing two second-half touchdown passes to guide Syracuse to a victory in its conference opener, while Whigham earned ACC co-Defensive Back of the Week accolades after tallying a personal-best seven tackles and breaking up two passes against the Demon Deacons.
Â
Dungey became the sixth Syracuse true freshman to start a game at quarterback since freshmen became eligible in 1972. He completed 8-of-13 pass attempts for 221 yards, including 186 yards in the second half.Â
The Lake Oswego, Ore. native connected with Brisly Estime for an 89-yard touchdown near the end of the third quarter, marking the third-longest pass play in team history. He then sealed the victory with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Steve Ishmael early in the fourth.
With four TD passes in two games, Dungey has already matched the Syracuse single-season record for most touchdown passes by a true freshman.
Â
Whigham's seven stops eclipsed his previous best by one and he leads all active Orange defenders with eight career pass breakups.
Â
Syracuse continues its four-game Carrier Dome homestand against Central Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 19. Kickoff is set 12:30 p.m. The game will be presented by National Grid and air live on RSN.
Tickets are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) and at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B). In addition, discounted group tickets (20 or more) can be purchased by calling 315-443-3212.
