SYRACUSE, N.Y. –Syracuse sophomore Paschal Chukwu has been selected to the 2017 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Watch List, announced Friday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In its third year, the award recognizes the top center in Division I men's college basketball.
Chukwu joins 19 other Division I players being named to the list, determined by a national committee of top collegiate basketball personnel.
The list will be narrowed in mid-February to 10 players, while the five finalists will be announced in March. The winner of the 2017 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards in Los Angeles, Calif., on April 7, 2017.
Chukwu sat out last season as a redshirt due to NCAA transfer rules. He had played his rookie year at Providence.
As a freshman, Chukwu helped the Friars reach the BIG EAST Conference tournament semifinals and earn a spot in the 2015 NCAA Tournament by averaging 2.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game off the bench.
Chukwu and the Orange basketball team open the 2016-17 season at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 when they welcome Indiana University (Pa.) for an exhibition game.
Season tickets, which remain the best ticket value for fans, are on sale now. There are a limited number of $250 season tickets still available.
Tickets may be purchased online, by phone through Ticketmaster at 888-DOMETIX (888-366-3849), or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office.
