Donahue, Mullins and Williams Tabbed to Tewaaraton Watch List
2/23/2016 8:32:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Three standouts for the No. 4 Syracuse men's lacrosse team have been selected to the 50-player Tewaaraton Award Watch List, by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Redshirt senior captains Dylan Donahue and Brandon Mullins, as well as junior Ben Williams were added to the first watch list, which is comprised of the top-50 players across all-three divisions of collegiate lacrosse.
Donahue enters Sunday's contest with Albany holding the nation's longest active point streak at 41 games and second-longest goals streak at 26 games. He netted 50 goals in 2015, becoming the first Syracuse player to hit the benchmark since 1991, and has led the team in goals each of the last-two seasons. A USILA Third Team All-American in 2015, Donahue currently leads the ACC in points per game on the early season, after tying a career high with nine points against Siena and posting a game-high five points in the Orange's win over No. 12 Albany. Donahue was also a Tewaaraton Award nominee in 2015
Mullins has anchored the 'Cuse defense for the last-two seasons heading into his final campaign with 'Cuse. The Coppell, Texas native was also a Tewaaraton Award Nominee in 2015, and has twice been named to the All-ACC team. A 2015 USILA First Team All-American after earning second team honors the year prior, Mullins has started 34-straight games on close defense for Syracuse.
Williams is coming off one of the most productive seasons in Syracuse history at the face off X. A 2015 Tewaaraton Award Nominee and USILA Third Team All-American, Williams finished second nationally and first in the ACC in faceoff win percentage (.674) and was the nation's leader in ground balls per game with 9.56. He collected 153 ground balls in 2015, which was the second-most in program history behind Sam Bassett in 2000. Williams has already picked up right where he left off, collecting ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors after winning 17-of-24 face offs against No. 12 Albany on Sunday.
This first watch list is based off last year's performance, with additions to the watch list based on 2016 play to be made on March 17 and April 7, before the field is narrowed to 25 nominees on April 28. A player does not need to be on a watch list to be a nominee, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. The 25 nominees will be cut to five finalists on May 12, and invited to the ceremony, which will be held in Washington, D.C. on June 2.
The Tewaaraton Award presented by Under Armour, which was first awarded in 2001, honors the top male and female in collegiate lacrosse, with the selection committees made up of premiere collegiate coaches who are appointed by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Syracuse student-athletes have won three Tewaaraton Awards, with Mike Powell winning in 2002 and 2004, and Mike Leveille earning the honor in 2008. Jim Brown also won the inaugural Tewaaraton Legends Award, which recognizes a player who would have won the award had it existed at the time he competed. 'Cuse also has a fifth award recipient from the Tewaaraton Foundation, with legendary coach Roy Simmons Jr. being awarded the Spirit of the Tewaaraton Award in 2009, which is presented to an individual who nobly reflects the finest virtues exemplified in the game and who has made a significant contribution to society and the lives of others.
Syracuse continues its home stand on Sunday, Feb. 28 when the Orange will host Army West Point at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/Tickets, by calling 1-888-DOMETIX or by visiting the Carrier Dome Box Office.
