SYRACUSE – The 'Hoops for the Stars' program will be highlighted on February 27 with an on-court presentation at the Carrier Dome to honor more than 150 area youth at the Syracuse University men's basketball game against North Carolina State. A similar event was held on February 11 when Syracuse hosted Florida State.
For the eighth year in a row, Syracuse University and National Grid Foundation continue to partner to provide positive reinforcement, recognition of improved academic performance and attendance in school, a decrease in negative behavior, and positive contributions to the community. The program underscores a shared commitment by Syracuse University Athletics, National Grid Foundation and the Syracuse City School District to work together in enriching the educational and life experience of area youth.
"Syracuse University has a long history of partnering with local entities to improve the lives of the members of our community," said Mark Coyle, Syracuse University Director of Athletics. "The athletic department is honored to join with the National Grid Foundation on this cooperative effort that benefits students from the Syracuse City School District."
Through a National Grid Foundation commitment of $35,000 this year, Syracuse University Athletics is providing tickets to 12 men's basketball home games. Ticket recipients include more than 2,300 student achievers from eight middle schools in the Syracuse City School District and a parent or guardian to select Orange Men Basketball games.
"Through this partnership with Syracuse University, the Hoops for the Stars program promotes academic achievement and encourages students to reach their highest potential," said Melanie Littlejohn, Board Member, National Grid Foundation. "At the close of another great Hoops for the Stars season, we are especially excited about the 'Rising Star' award. This is a special occasion to honor students for extraordinary accomplishments. While all the children are bright stars, we want to recognize the most outstanding student achievers."
"The National Grid Foundation and Syracuse University have been tremendous partners to the Syracuse City School District," said Sharon Contreras, Superintendent of Syracuse City Schools. "Hoops for the Stars provides our students with an incentive to continue to excel in the classroom, attend school regularly and be good citizens in their respective school communities. These partnerships are imperative for turning schools around."
