Mariano gets third-straight hat trick
The No. 3 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (5-1) jumped out to an early lead behind six different members of the Orange scoring the first-six goals, but No. 8 Johns Hopkins (4-2) used a pair of 3-0 Â runs after halftime to win 11-10 in overtime in the 55th edition of the rivalry between the programs.
Nick Mariano notched his third-straight hat trick, while Sergio Salcido also recorded a pair of goals for the Orange, which were handed their first loss of the season on a rainy and snowy evening at Homewood Field.
Â
Mariano got the Syracuse scoring started over-seven minutes into the first quarter, when he rolled around the right side of the cage and rifled a left-handed shot past Blue Jays net minder Brock Turnbaugh. Tim Barber then notched a 2-0 lead for Syracuse when he finished a feed from Paolo Ciferri with a rocket from the left side of the cage, where the score would stay at the end of the quarter. It was the lowest combined scoring quarter of the season, and lowest since Syracuse and Colgate each notched one goal in the second quarter of last season's meeting on May 2.
But the scoring quickly picked up. Dylan Donahue ignited the second quarter scoring less than a minute in when he rolled back his defender and scored to the top-corner to open up a 3-0 lead. Donahue's goal extended the nation's second-longest goal scoring streak to 31 games and nation's longest point streak to 45 games.
Â
The Orange took advantage of their first man-up chance of the game, with Matt Lane stepping into a pass from Barber to extend the Syracuse lead to four with 11:43 to play in the half.h
After Drew Supinski finally got Johns Hopkins on the board after 22:51 of shutout 'Cuse defense to start the game, Sergio Salcido got into the scoring mix less than a minute later to answer the early Hopkins tally. He scored on a pass from Donahue to keep the Syracuse lead at four with less than five minutes elapsed in the quarter.
Â
The Blue Jays kept the scoring coming, with Wilkins Dismuke and Drew Supinski netting two goals in little more than a minute, before Jordan Evans finished a feed from Derek DeJoe to halt the mini run by Hopkins.
Â
Cody Radziewicz kept the offense coming for the Blue Jays, netting his first of three with 1:40 left in the half to pull back within two, but Mariano found the back of the net with 24 ticks before the break to send the Orange to the locker room with a 7-4 lead.
Â
Radziewicz got the second half scoring started after 11:15 of scoreless play out of halftime by burying back-to-back goals before Patrick Fraser scored to tie things at seven late in the third. Joe Gillis scored for the Orange to halt the run with 12 seconds remaining in the third, but 44 seconds later, Fraser scored again to tie the game once again at eight.
Mariano and Salcido scored back-to-back goals for the Orange, but Hopkins scored twice, including a goal by Ryan Brown with 38 seconds left to send the game to overtime tied at 10.
After Johns Hopkins won the opening faceoff in overtime, Warren Hill turned away the first Blue Jays' chance, but Dismuke batted the ball out of the air into the net for the game-winner.
Syracuse outshot Hopkins 36-26 in the loss and won the ground ball battle 26-18. Hill made five saves in the game, with Turnbaugh making 10. Ben Williams won 13-of-24 faceoffs for the Orange as well.
Syracuse will continue its road swing next Saturday when the team faces Duke at Noon on ESPNU.
