Palamar and Hubbard set to open the meet for the Orange
Syracuse has six student-athletes set to compete at this week's NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begin on Friday in Birmingham, Alabama. Cuse.com will take an event-by-event look at each of the five events Syracuse will be competing in as we head towards the championships.
Before the 2015 indoor campaign, Syracuse had never had a miler break the four-minute barrier. In the last-year, 'Cuse has posted sub-four times seven times by four-different runners, including Joel Hubbard and Adam Palamar, who've each done it twice this season, who will represent the Orange in the event this weekend.
The duo set their qualifying times at Boston University over two events, the John Thomas Terrier Invitational and the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, when both went under the previous school record, with Hubbard crossing the line in 3:58.43 at the Valentine Invite and Palamar finishing in 3:58.55 at the Terrier Invite. In addition, Justyn Knight set the school record in the mile during Terrier Invite, closing strong to a finish of 3:56.87, however he'll only race in the 3000-meters this weekend.
The mile is a tight field, with just 2.62 seconds seperating the entire field of qualifying times. Oregon's Blake Haney is the top-seed (3:56.36) and is the only sub-3:57 seed time, while Hubbard checks in at No. 11 and Palamar sits in 13th in the 16-person field heading into the race.
The Orange duo is two-of-three ACC competitors in the event, with Virginia's Henry Wynne serving as the No. 14 seed.
Palamar and Hubbard are also some of the most experienced milers in the field this weekend, with only two-other competitors in the top-13 seeds running more than three mile events this season.
The men's mile is the first event on the weekend, with prelims beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with the final set to begin on Saturday at 4 p.m.
