ITHACA, N.Y. -Â Ben Williams won 18-of-22 faceoffs and Nick Mariano tallied four goals, but the No. 11 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (6-4) fell in its regular season road finale to Cornell (5-5) on Tuesday night at Schoellkopf Field.
Mariano's three goals were a season high, while Jordan Evans and Dylan Donahue each chipped in three points on the evening as well.
Dylan Donahue opened the Syracuse scoring with a spin move on the crease to get free in front of the net, finishing for the first goal of the game.
His goal extended his streak to 49-straight games with a point and 35-straight games with a goal, both of which lead the nation.
Jordan Evans then got into the scoring mix midway through the first, tallying his eighth goal in the last-seven quarters dating back to the start of the second half against Notre Dame. Cornell scored n and Andrew Keith goal to get on the board, but Mariano quickly answered with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. However, Cornell's Clarke Petterson beat the buzzer on a pass from Anthony Teixeira to pull within one at the first intermission.
Emmy Poccia scored the first goal of the second period to even things up at three, before Mariano and Donahue netted back-to-back goals, both off passes from Evans, to take a 5-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Cornell answered the two late 'Cuse goals in the first half to knot things up once again at five, with Petterson and Kason Tarbell finding the back of the net for the Big Red.
Austin Fusco's first-career goal halted the Cornell mini run though, when he finished a pass from Dylan Donahue, marking the first goal by a long pole for the Orange this season with 9:43 left in the third.
Less than three minutes later, Barber scored an unassisted goal to put 'Cuse back up two, but Cornell again rallied. Tarbell and Ryan Matthews scored for the Big Red to equalize the game at seven heading into the fourth quarter.
Mariano gave Syracuse the lead with 13:54 to play in regulation, but Petterson tied it with 8:41 to play, starting a string of three goals in a minute of play.
Forty seconds after Petterson's goal, Mariano again put Syracuse back up on top, but just 15 seconds after doing so, Dan Bockelman notched the game-tying goal.
Both teams had opportunities to win it late in regulation, with Evan Molloy making a big stop on the doorstep with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Williams, as he did all evening, won the face off for 'Cuse in the extra session, but a crease violation on a shot turned the ball back to Cornell, with Ryan Matthews ending it with 1:23 on the clock in OT.
Syracuse will have little time to dwell on the loss, as they close out ACC play on Saturday, hosting North Carolina in the final conference test of the regular season at 4 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and tape delayed for ESPNU for the following morning.
