Bailey helped Canada to a sixth-place finish at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Guard Chelayne Bailey of Pickering, Ontario has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Syracuse University women's basketball program for the upcoming 2016-17 season, head coach Quentin Hillsman announced on Thursday morning. Bailey becomes the fifth member of the Orange's signing class that was ranked No. 25 nationally by the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report in November.
"Chelayne is a very explosive guard off the bounce with the ability to disrupt the game with her tenacious on-ball defense," commented Hillsman. "Her speed and quickness is constant on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. She fits us perfectly."
A 5-6 guard from Pickering High School, Bailey is a three-star recruit according to espnW HoopGurlz. She was ranked the No. 109 guard in her class and was given a scout grade of 88.
Bailey has significant international experience, playing for the Canadian U17 national team at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship in the Czech Republic. Bailey played in all seven contests, averaging 1.3 points, 2.7 boards, and 1.7 assists per game. Along with Orange freshman forward Julia Chandler, Bailey helped Canada to a sixth-place showing.
Syracuse is primed for another stellar season in 2016-17. The Orange return a solid foundation following their first trip to the national championship game. The club returns three of its top four scorers in junior guard Alexis Peterson, redshirt junior guard Brittney Sykes, and junior center Briana Day.
