Orange conclude regular season on Sunday at No. 10 Dartmouth
LEONIA, N.J. – The No. 11 Syracuse University men's rowing team defeated No. 18 Columbia in all three races the crews competed in on Saturday morning on Overpeck Creek. No. 7 Boston University swept the competition, retaining the Conlan Cup and Doc Lusins Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.
"I think all three of our crews raced pretty hard," head coach Dave Reischamn stated.
With the Conlan Cup on the line between Syracuse and Boston University in the first varsity eight competition, the Orange jumped out to an early lead. The Terriers were not fazed and took the lead at the 500-meter buoy. Syracuse continued to press Boston University throughout the rest of the race, but the Terriers would hold on for its fourth straight win in the series.
"We were happy to be up off the start. It looks like we spent a touch too much energy doing it," commented Reischman. "What I like to see as a coach is we were really tough in that third 500. BU got out on us in the second 500. We did a good job not giving into it and trying to hang on to their stern all the way down the race course.
The second varsity eight competition would feature the most theatrics. Boston University led wire-to-wire, but it was the finish between Syracuse and Columbia that was the story of the race. The Orange overtook the Lions in the opening 500 meters and held off the late charge by the host crew in a near photo finish.
"I thought the second varsity eight showed a lot of guts," said Reischman. "They may have paid for their first 1,000 efforts a little bit."
In the first race of the day, Boston University claimed a victory in the third varsity eight competition. Syracuse passed Columbia in the first 1,000 meters and ultimately defeated the Lions by open water.
"I thought the third varsity eight did a much better job in the first 1,000 meters," added Reischman. "They established a good, effective rhythm and got into the race early."
The Orange are right back on the water for their final race of the regular season against No. 10 Dartmouth on Sunday. Racing will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the Connecticut River in Hanover, N.H. Directions to Dartmouth's Corey Ford Rugby Clubhouse are accessible here.
