Syracuse defeats No. 10 Dartmouth for Packard Cup on Sunday
HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 11 Syracuse University men's rowing first varsity eight crew defeated No. 10 Dartmouth in its final race of the regular season to claim the Packard Cup for the first time since 2012 on Sunday morning on the Connecticut River.
"We don't talk about it, but as a team they were aware of the last time we brought home the Packard Cup," head coach Dave Reischman stated. "It's a group of guys that has the ability to focus in on the plan. Going in, the plan was to focus on us and keep our heads down and race really hard. We have a lot of respect for those Dartmouth guys. It was a pretty tall order to beat them. I thought we put our heads in our boat and focused on going as fast as we could."
Facing a quick turnaround from Saturday's competition against No. 7 Boston University and No. 18 Columbia on Saturday in Leonia, N.J., the Orange snapped the Big Green's streak of three consecutive Packard Cup victories with their win in the 2016 regular season finale. Syracuse has won the trophy 28 times since the inception of the Packard Cup race in 1960.
"I thought we handled that well, particularly our varsity boat," commented Reischman. "I thought the varsity was on point right from the beginning. They raced with the sort of the aggressiveness that they needed."
It was a close race throughout between the Orange and Big Green's top boats. It was a back-and-forth affair until Syracuse was able to just pull away at the end of the race. SU was able to put half of a deck in front of the host crew to register the win.
The second varsity eight boat maintained the grit it has shown throughout the regular season, but came up short against Dartmouth. Syracuse made a late charge at the end of the 2,000-meter course, but did not have enough in the tank at the very end.
In the first race of the morning, the Orange third varsity eight boat finished in second place behind the Big Green, but ahead of the host fourth varsity eight crew.
With the completion of the regular season, Syracuse now prepares for the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Men's Sprints. The annual conference championship will be held on Sunday, May 15 in Worcester, Mass.
