Syracuse knocked off Wisconsin in the first varsity eight competition
SKOKIE, Ill. – The No. 18 Syracuse University men's rowing team opened its 2016 season with a victory against No. 12 Wisconsin in the first varsity eight race on Saturday morning. Wisconsin was victorious in the second and third varsity eight competitions.
"We were down maybe three seats at the start," head coach Dave Reischman said. "I thought the guys just did a really good job. We talked about that before the racing. We knew Wisconsin liked to go out high and hard. We talked about staying composed. I thought the guys did a really good job of that."
In the first race of the day, the Orange defeated the Badgers in the first varsity eight competition. Syracuse trailed at the 1,000-meter mark, but pulled away at the end, winning by open water. The first varsity eight crew covered the course in 5:42.7.
"We are really good at keeping the boat speed going," added Reischman. "We talked more about every stroke the attitude being that just another inch, just another inch. It is not a power crew, but it is a crew that will do their work over the race course. They are grinders."
The second race of the day, the second varsity eight competition, was hotly contested. Wisconsin led nearly the whole way, but Syracuse would not concede. The Badgers ultimately pulled away at the end of the race, recording a victory by eight seconds.
Wisconsin defeated Syracuse in the third and final race of the day, the third varsity eight competition. The Badgers claimed a 10-second victory.
The Orange are back in action next weekend when they take on No. 8 Cornell and No. 10 Navy on Saturday, April 16 in Annapolis, Md. Syracuse is looking to claim the Goes Trophy for the first time since the 2011 season.
