Orange outperform seed in second varsity eight
WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 10 Syracuse University men's rowing team placed 10th in all three races it competed in at its annual conference championship, the 2016 Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Men's Sprints, on Sunday.
"We were pretty pleased with our racing overall today," head coach Dave Reischman stated. "I thought the guys in all of our boats fought really well. I thought our inexperience showed in the tricky winds on the race course. We are looking forward to the next three weeks and making the improvements we can make heading into the IRAs."
The first varsity eight, seeded eighth heading into the event, finished fourth in the petite final, 10th place overall. Syracuse covered the 2,000-meter course in 5:47.998, bettering its time by more than seconds from its morning heat.
The Orange improved their seeding in the second varsity eight competition. Heading into the conference championship, Syracuse notched the No. 11 seed. The crew placed fourth in the petite final, 10th place overall.
The third varsity eight boat, the ninth seed heading into the event, finished in fourth in the petite final, 10th place overall. SU notched a time of 6:05.277, an improvement by more than nine seconds from the morning.
Syracuse now awaits its postseason fate. The field for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta will be announced in the upcoming week. The annual men's rowing national championship will be held in West Windsor, N.J. from June 3-5.
