#CuseCamp16: Scrimmage II Recap

Eric Dungey accounts for four touchdowns
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With #CuseCamp16 winding down, the Orange football team held its second preseason scrimmage on Saturday morning inside the Carrier Dome. The Orange ran 168 plays during the 1-hour-and 36-minute session that also included special teams periods of punt return, kickoff return and field goals.
The scrimmage marked one of the final opportunities for players to cement their spot in the lineup with the regular-season opener against Colgate less than two weeks away.
"We will do one more [scrimmage], but it won't have the intensity that we had in this last one," SU head coach Dino Babers said. "This is the final one. We are about to solidify some depth charts. The next one will be geared exclusively toward Colgate."
Quarterback Eric Dungey did his best to make a case to be the Orange's starting signal caller when the Raiders come calling. The sophomore accounted for four total touchdowns Saturday, throwing for three and running for another. Dungey's first TD pass came on a 50-yard strike to Amba Etta-Tawo after a long run up the middle by Jordan Fredericks. A few plays later, Dungey tossed his second TD of the morning, finding Ervin Philips in the end zone from about 20 yards out.
Later in the scrimmage, Dungey used his legs to cap a scoring drive that began at the 40-yard line. After converting on a fourth-and-short, he ran the ball in from five yards out. Dungey's final touchdown pass came in the second half to Fredericks. The scoring play was set up by back-to-back long completions to Steve Ishmael.
Â
In addition to Dungey, freshman Rex Culpepper also had a passing touchdown during the normal run of play. He linked up with his old Plant High School (Fla.) teammate Scoop Bradshaw for a score in the opening half.
Â
Defensively, redshirt sophomore corner Juwan Dowels anchored a unit that made five interceptions. Dowels picked off two passes, while Steven Clark, Ted Taylor and Corey Winfield each had one. Jaquwan Nelson and Jonathan Thomas were each credited with sacks. The defense did not recover a fumble.
"The ball security was good. Running the football and not letting go. People striking you and not giving it up," Babers said. "I thought on the defensive side they took advantage of some tipped balls and really broke on the football aggressively. They came up with some key interceptions that stopped some major drives."
Â
Babers used the last segment of the scrimmage to work on offensive and defensive execution in the red zone. During that period, redshirt junior quarterback Austin Wilson tossed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Custis. Winfield's interception on the 5-yard line denied the offense another scoring opportunity. Overall, the first-year coach was pleased with how his team reacted in those situations.
"I think there was a lot of growth in that area [situational football]. It's really big for us to have what we call a lot of 'CS' on the football field – common sense in certain situations, down and distance," Babers said. "We want those guys to be thinking like coaches."

Preseason camp continues for the Orange Sunday with their annual trip to Fort Drum. The Orange will travel to the U.S. Army post tomorrow morning for a day of community engagement and team-building activities. Syracuse will host a youth football clinic for children of military personnel, have lunch with members of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team and participate in a paintball match. Â
Upon returning from Fort Drum, the Orange have three more days of camp before turning their attention fully to the Sept. 2 opener against Colgate. Kickoff between the Orange and Raiders is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
