Manley and USA Field Hockey Down Argentina in Olympic Opener
8/6/2016 6:29:00 PM | Field Hockey
The 2016 Olympics kicked off with an upset – at least in terms of FIH World Rankings – when Orange field hockey standout Alyssa Manley and the U.S. knocked off Argentina 2-1 in the opening match in Rio.
Argentina, which entered the games as the Group B favorite and No. 2 ranked team in the world, controlled the early possession and the majority of the first quarter.
However, the Americans settled down in the second quarter and the teams headed to halftime knotted at 0. After an early second-half goal from the Argentinians was waived off after a video referral, the USWNT netted back-to-back goals off the sticks of Katie Reinprecht and Michelle Kasold to take a 2-0 lead. Argentina added a late goal, but the U.S. squad managed to hold them off to preserve the win.
Manley saw plenty of action as a reserve for head coach Craig Parnham, entering the game less than five minutes into play and serving as a key component of the USA back five throughout the match.
Next, USA will continue Group B play on Monday at 9 a.m. vs. Australia. The contest will be shown live on NBC Sports Network.
