FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Syracuse women's soccer team continued its winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory at Fairfield (1-7-0) in a windblown contest. The Orange improve to 6-1-1 and end their longest road swing in non-conference play with three straight wins.
"It was a great weekend for us, going 2-0 on the road," head coach Phil Wheddon said. "Once again, this was a total team win. Everyone contributed. We felt like we've ironed out some rough spots over the course of these two games. We have found a little bit of an organized identity as a team. We had to deal with adverse conditions, today the wind was a major factor."
The scoring got started in the 33rd minute when Steph Skilton found the back of the net from a Taylor Bennett and Eva Gordon double-assist on a free kick. Four minutes later, Alana O'Neill got the ball past a scrum of Fairfield defenders for the second Orange goal of the afternoon.
Playing into to the wind in the second half, freshman Sydney Brackett scored her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute. Syracuse won a ball in transition and played it to Brackett. The freshman outran two Fairfield defenders in a 60-yard breakaway and dribbled past the keeper. She calmly slotted the ball into the goal with her left foot to put the Orange ahead 3-0.
Sunday's game was the fifth shutout of the season for goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, which is a new season-high for the junior after recording four clean sheets in 2015 and three in 2014. In eight games this season, Brosnan has allowed only four goals giving her a 0.49 goals against average. Junior goalkeeper Annette Cappellino saw 15 minutes of action in Sunday's contest.
It was the third goal of the season for Skilton and O'Neill, leading Syracuse in scoring. Skilton now was 24 career goals, bring her to within one of fourth in all-time scoring at Syracuse.
The Orange outshot Fairfield 13-8 in the match and pressed for eight shots on goal. Wheddon went to the bench in the contest, with 18 total players seeing action.
Syracuse will return to SU Soccer Stadium Thursday against Buffalo (3-2-2) at 7 p.m. Then the Orange will open Atlantic Coast Conference play on Sunday, hosting Notre Dame (5-1-1) for a 1 p.m. showdown.
