SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Two-time Super Bowl champion coach and 1968 Syracuse University graduate Tom Coughlin will accompany the Orange captains to midfield Saturday for the opening coin toss when Syracuse squares off against Notre Dame in the 2016 New York's College Classic at MetLife Stadium.
Â
Coughlin spent 20 years as an NFL head coach, including 12 seasons as the leader of the New York Giants from 2004-15. He won 102 games with Big Blue and guided the franchise to wins over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI. Coughlin also served as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995-2002. He is currently the NFL's senior advisor to football operations.
Â
At Syracuse, Coughlin played three seasons (1965-67) for legendary head coach Ben Schwartzwalder and shared the Orange backfield with future College and Pro Football Hall of Famers Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. As a senior in 1967, Coughlin led Syracuse in both receptions (26) and yards (257) to help the Orange to an 8-2 record and the No. 12 ranking in the final United Press International (UPI) poll.
Â
After graduation, Schwartzwalder gave Coughlin his coaching start by appointing him Syracuse's assistant freshman coach in 1968. He then worked on the staff at RIT for five seasons, including four (1970-73) as head coach, before returning to Syracuse as the offensive backs coach in 1974 under Frank Maloney. Overall, Coughlin spent seven years as an Orange assistant, including three (1978-80) as the team's offensive coordinator.
Â
In 1981, Coughlin went to work at Boston College. He served three years as the Eagles' quarterbacks coach before entering the professional ranks. Coughlin was an NFL assistant for seven years with the Philadelphia Eagles (1984-85), Green Bay Packers (1986-87) and New York Giants (1988-90) before returning to Boston College as the team's head coach in 1991. Coughlin spent three seasons guiding the Eagles before taking the reins of the expansion Jaguars.
Â
"Football has been the catalyst, the opportunity for my family and I to meet some wonderful people and stay in the game that I am so passionate about and love so much," Coughlin said.
Â
Kickoff between the Orange and Fighting Irish is set for noon on ESPN. Tickets for the game are available online at nycollegeclassic.com and by phone at the Carrier Dome Box Office (888-DOMETIX).Â
