
Franklin, Hurff named Scholar Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Zaire Franklin of the Syracuse football team and Laura Hurff of the 'Cuse field hockey team are this week's Orange Scholar-Athletes of the Week.

Franklin is a dual major in finance and marketing management in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Franklin is actively involved with the Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes and is a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).Â

On the field, Franklin has appeared in all 25 games in his career, starting the last 16 contests. Voted the fourth sophomore captain in team history in 2015, and first since 1945, Franklin led the Orange with 81 tackles and ranked second in tackles for loss (11) in last season. In the 2016 season opener against Colgate, he notched four stops.
Franklin has earned a spot on the Syracuse University Athletic Director's Honor Roll in three of his four semesters and was a member of the All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Honor Roll in 2014.Â

Hurff is an education major in the School of Education. A native of Newark, Delaware, Hurff earned a silver medal this summer with USA Field Hockey's U-21 team at the Junior Pan Am games in Trinidad and Tobago. Hurff was also selected to play in USA Field Hockey's Young Women's National Championship.Â
Named a National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) First Team All-American, Hurff was an All-ACC Second Team selection and an NFHCA All-Academic team member in 2015. She has appeared in the starting lineup for the Orange in all but two games in her two collegiate seasons.

Franklin and the Orange football team return to the Carrier Dome this Friday, Sept. 9 for a showdown with ACC foe Louisville at 8 p.m. Lower-level season tickets Tickets are available online or by phone at 888-DOMETIX. Â
Hurff and the Syracuse field hockey team host Boston College their home-opener Friday afternoon. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. and will feature the unveiling of the team's 2015 NCAA Championship banner.
