Numerous Wins Highlight Upstate Challenge for Orange

Syracuse picked up a number of wins at the Upstate Challenge on Saturday, an event that kicked off the season for most of the distance runners, while serving as the second meet of the year for many of the sprinters and jumpers.
In the men's mile, 'Cuse put five runners in the top-six and six in the top-10 on Saturday. Freshman Joe Dragon led the way, winning the event in 4:14.57, followed closely be Kevin James who took second (4:15.91). TJ Hornberger (4:16.35), Griff Molino (4:17.56) and Nick Ryan (4:20.08), finished fourth through sixth respectively. Andy Paladino rounded out the Orange top-10 performances by taking 10th in 4:22.83.
Nearly the same went for the women, with five Orange in the top-seven. Paige Stonger took home the win in 4:52.55, followed by Sydney Leiher (4:54.63) in second. McKenzie Altmayer (5:01.08), Rachel Bonner (5:01.12) and Madeleine Davison (5:03.04) finished fourth, fifth and seventh respectively.
For the second-week in a row, the Orange took the 60-meter hurdles title at a meet, this time Danielle Delgado earned the win for the women, crossing the line in 8.56 seconds. On the men's side, Richard Floyd (8.17) and Chevis Armstead (8.20) finished second and third for 'Cuse.

In the 800, Adam Palamar and Paul Lovell each reached the podium, with Palamar bringing home the win (1.52.53) and Lovell finishing third (1:54.86). Sam Somera (2:01.64) placed 12th. Sydney Leiher turned in another podium finish on the day, this time taking first in the 800, finishing in 2:17.22.

Aidan Tooker placed second in the 1000-meters, turning in a time of 2:27.57, which was less than a second off Binghamton's Eric Holt's winning time. Joel Hubbard also made his season debut in the event, finishing 11th with a time of 2:43.97. Kelsey Potts (3:06.26) finished seventh in the women's event.
Pascal Bastein finished fifth in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 51.31 seconds. LaZyrick Middlebrooks (51.45) took seventh.
Kashif Miller took fourth in the 60-meter dash after finishing in 7.03 seconds for the men, while Justice Richardson (7.72/3rd) and Victoria Parker (7.88/5th) turned in strong performances for the women.

Domonicc Hockenbury's time of 8:34.81 was good for sixth in the 3000-meter run, while teammate Simon Smith finished 10th.

In jumps, Randall Johnson finished third in the long jump after he carried a distance of 7.02 meters. Aviana Goode leapt to a mark of 5.32 meters to place fifth in the long jump. She also finished fifth in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters.
'Cuse is back in action next week at a trio of meets, some members of the team will head to the John Thomas Invitational, while others will go to Seattle for the UW Invitational or the Villanova Open.
