1/9/2017 12:58:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
The Syracuse men's lacrosse season will begin the 2017 campaign ranked No. 5 in the Nike/USILA Coaches Poll and will square off with six of the preseason top-14 teams, including four of the top eight this season.
'Cuse, which is coming off a second-straight ACC Championship in 2016 and returns three Second Team All-America selections from last season, collected 256 points in the poll. North Carolina, the defending NCAA Champions, received 341 points and eight first place votes to headline the poll.
The Tar Heels were followed by their 2016 title game opponent Maryland (331 points, four first place votes) and Denver (320 points, six first place votes) in second and third respectively. ACC foe Notre Dame (298 points) checks in at No. 4 ahead of the Orange, marking three ACC squads in the top-five.
Additionally, No. 7 Duke (242 points), No. 8 Johns Hopkins (210 points), No. 13 Albany (132 points), No. 14 Virginia (128 points) are all on Syracuse's 2017 schedule. Other opponents Cornell, Hobart and Colgate are also receiving votes just outside the top-20.
The Orange returns three All-Americans from last year's roster - Nick Mariano, Sergio Salcido and Ben Williams - seven players who recorded at least one start and 20 players who saw action in at least 10 games.
'Cuse will begin its 2017 charge on Feb. 11 when the team hosts Siena at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
