Orange Comeback Not Enough Against Wolfpack
10/6/2017 10:24:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The rv/-- Syracuse men's soccer team couldn't overcome a two-goal first-half deficit in a 2-1 setback to North Carolina State at the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 6.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange (5-6-2, 0-4-1) were the more dangerous team in the opening minutes of the match but it was North Carolina State (6-4-1, 2-3-0) that scored the first goal in the seventh minute. Ade Taiwo received a pass in the box, but his dribble deflected off a Syracuse defender to Julius Duchscherer on the right side of the box, who put his shot in the back of the net.
Â
Duchscherer recorded his second goal of the game in the 27th minute when he scored on an assist from Tanner Roberts to give the Wolfpack a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Syracuse came out as the aggressor after halftime and cut the lead in half when junior Kamal Miller converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute. The Orange continued to dominate possession, but couldn't score the equalizer. Syracuse earned two of its five second-half corner kicks in the final two minutes of play, but couldn't get off a shot on either as it lost its third straight one-goal game.
Â
"Tonight, I thought if we get that second goal, I think we win the game. It was one-way traffic in the second half. Sometimes, I ask for a reaction at halftime and the guys gave that. When you're down by two, you have nothing to lose so you do kind of throw it out there and go. We were very good second half. We weren't bad in the first half. The disappointing thing is that we conceded two poor goals. And physically, I think we were second best for parts of the first half. Unfortunately, the scoreboard says we lost 2-1. "
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse outshot North Carolina State, 9-5, and earned seven corner kicks to one for the Wolfpack. The Orange rank fourth in the ACC in corner kicks this season.

Syracuse is back in action one week from tonight when it takes on Boston College in Newton, Mass. on Friday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m.
