NEW YORK - The Tewaaraton Award announced its first watch list of the 2017 season on Tuesday night at a live reveal in New York, featuring 50 returning players, with three members of the Orange represented.
Â
Seniors Nick Mariano, Sergio Salcido and Ben Williams were named to the list, which was made up of the top-50 returning players based on their 2016 contributions. The Orange's three representatives trails just Notre Dame's four for the most of any program in the nation.
Mariano, a 2016 USILA Second Team All-American who led the Orange in goals last season with 35, leads the team with 13 points through the first-three games this season. Mariano was also named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American prior to the start of this season.
Another USILA Second Team All-American from last year, Salcido was selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team and was named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American this year. He has 11 points on the year thus far.
Williams earned USILA Second Team All-America honors as well in 2016. He missed the Army game due to injury, but has won 69-percent of his face offs through his first two games of 2017.
The Tewaaraton has been presented annually since 2001, with a Syracuse player winning the award on three separate occasions. Mike Powell (2002, 2004) and Mike Leveille (2008) are SU's previous award winners.
Players not named to the initial lists have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 16 and April 6. On April 27, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions.Â
Â
Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 11 and invited to the ceremony. The 17th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on June 1.
Syracuse and Virginia will square off in a top-12 matchup on Sunday at noon in the Carrier Dome.
