GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Oyvind Alseth leads a group of five members of the Syracuse men's soccer team named to the ACC All-Academic Team, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Orange were one of three schools with five honorees, which was the highest total in the league.
Â
Alseth earns the honor for the third consecutive year. He is joined on the team by sophomores Jonathan Hagman and Hendrik Hilpert and freshman Mo Adams and Johannes Pieles.
Â
Alseth started all 20 matches in the midfield for the Orange this season. He tied for the team lead with four assists and finished the year with six points. The two-time team captain was drafted in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC with the 21st pick of the third round. The finance major was a candidate for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.
Â
Hagman recorded career highs in points (11), goals (5) and assists (1) in 2016. He tied for second on the team in points and ranked second in goals. Hagman posted his first multiple-goal match of his career with two goals against Pittsburgh in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. The finance major was voted to the 2016 CoSIDA All-District Team.
Â
Hilpert played every minute in goal for the Orange in 2016 and ranked sixth in the nation in goals-against average (0.57) and 26th in save percentage (.806). He recorded 11 shutouts this season, which tie him for second place on Syracuse's single-season record list. Hilpert, a double major in economics and finance, became just the third member of the Syracuse men's soccer program to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, receiving third-team honors. He received Syracuse's Martin J. Whitman School of Management Freshman of the Year award earlier this fall.
Â
Adams was voted to the All-ACC Third Team as well as the league's All-Freshman Team. He started all 19 matches in which he played in the midfield for the Orange. Adams, who is enrolled in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, scored his first career goal in Syracuse's victory at Hartford.
Â
Pieles played in all 20 matches this season, making 14 starts. He was fourth on the team in points (10) and tied for the team lead with four assists. He was named the Offensive MVP of the Central New York Classic after recording five points in the two games. He had two goals against Loyola Marymount, including the game winner in overtime. Pieles is enrolled in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
Â
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Â
Syracuse finished the 2016 season with a 12-4-4 record. The Orange earned the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive year.
