Amba Etta-Tawo improves on Combine testing numbers
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Twelve former Orange players, including 11 from the 2016 team, showcased their talents for NFL scouts at Syracuse's annual Pro Day Monday, March 20 at the Ensley Athletic Center.
In addition to putting the participants through their paces on the field and in the weight room, team representatives also had the opportunity to watch film and meet with members of the Orange football staff.
Most eyes were on All-American wideout Amba Etta-Tawo, who rewrote the Syracuse receiving record book in his one year on campus. Etta-Tawo did not disappoint. He clocked a 4.35 in the 40-yard dash, bettering his time of 4.49 at the NFL Scouting Combine by more than one-tenth of a second. His time Monday would have placed third among receivers at the Combine behind only Washington's John Ross (4.22) and Ohio State's Curtis Samuel (4.33).
Etta-Tawo also improved upon his numbers in the vertical jump. He posted a leap of 33 inches, two inches higher than his Combine showing. Etta-Tawo credited the friendly confines of Ensley for his increased performance. He's also shed a few pounds since the first week of March.
"I've actually dropped five or six pounds, so I think played a large role in me dropping my 40 time as well," Etta-Tawo said.
Receiver Brisly Estime also ran well. He turned in an even 4.4 in the 40, which would have placed him in the top five among wideouts at the Combine. Estime, who led the nation in punt return average (17.7), was one of the day's most sought after interviews and took time to meet with multiple teams after the workout.
The only participant not with Syracuse last season was cornerback Julian Whigham, who concluded his eligibility in 2015. Whigham is hoping for another shot in the NFL and used Monday to reintroduce himself to scouts after spending time last year with the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Whigham tested well once again, recording the day's top result in the vertical jump for the second year in a row. His leap of 38 inches would have tied him for fifth among corners at this year's Combine. He posted a jump of 37 inches at last year's Pro Day.

Now that Pro Day is behind them, SU's NFL hopefuls will go about the business of scheduling private workouts with teams leading up to the draft, which begins April 27 in Philadelphia.
